What's Your Story?

I am constantly interested in other people, their stories. How they got to the room they’re in when I met them. Where they got the courage to jump off that bridge, take that risk. Or perhaps why they haven’t yet taken a desired risk, even though you can see the momentum building underground destined to burst to the surface sooner or later.

Here in the studio over the past 2.5 years, we’ve had several people work through ideas/job changes/relationship issues/life challenges with their hands deep in clay and then transition into something new after a few months. The act of creating can launch people into whole new lives. It can feel magical, almost spiritual.

One such person with a fabulous story is the esteemed Theresa Okokon. I’ve been following her writing career for a few years now. She is cohost of Stories From the Stage, a Pushcart Prize nominee, and frequent contributor to Cognoscenti- among other journals. Her journey from the yoga world to the writing world, with stops at plenty of other little islands along the way, is the stuff that can move one to take a leap of their own.

I’m so darn thrilled to have Theresa on staff at Create! She’ll be teaching our Personal Essay class in November and help you craft the stories of your life. We all have stories- lived lives interesting due to the nature of being alive- and they deserve to be documented.

For this short six-week session, we’ve got new classes by our regular rock-star teachers also: Pen & Ink Drawing with Justin Life, and ceramic tile making with Gustavo Barceloni -no ceramics experience necessary for this one!

I can’t think of a better way to pass these fall months than learning something new in our community as we head towards Winter.
